Number 9 - Does This Look Infected?

Now, I know that I will probably get a lot of shit for putting the fan favourite last, but hear me out. This was the first album, where Sum 41 started experimenting with heavier music. Personally, it doesn't work well, at least not here. To me it sounds like they are trying to hard to be different. I mean, they were good at pop punk, why not stick to it? It's most likely because Brownsound Dave, always felt he was overqualified for a pop punk band, and to be frank, despite how egotistical it sounds, he's right. But that begs the question, why did he join in the first place? Anyway, unrelated.

The production quality is good, and there is some epic guitar work, but that's more or less where the good points end. There are a few strong songs, the most obvious one being The Hell Song, although, I am a a bit bored of it. Another one is Thanks For Nothing, which reminds me a lot of Fat Lip, in the sense that it is a pop punk jam with rapped verses. However, in my honest opinion, TFN is better, actually, way better, than Fat Lip. And WWVII is for some reason a banger. I'm not a fan of Stevo's vocals, but in that song, they just work. I am aware that song is not available in all versions of the album though.

All in all, it's pretty mediocre at best. There's a lot of good songs, but being just good, is not enough, especially after All Killer, where most were great. I am by no means suggesting that I dislike the album, because that just isn't true, but this one in particular has the most skips for me. But like all good things, it does deserve a listen, even if it's just to help you realise that they did more songs than just In Too Deep and Fat Lip. Would I recommend it to a non fan? Probably not, at least not straight away. Maybe if they've heard all the others.

Must Listen Songs: The Hell Song, Thanks For Nothing, WWVII.
